Lon More.....(aka...lawn mower)
This is my first attempt at a blog.
Ha....for the guy who can't spell worth a hoot, I'm not even sure why I'm going
to attempt this. But in this day of social media....everybody keeps telling me
I am in the dark ages. Thanks to some proding by my staff and former
staff, I've slowly migrated my way to creating this page. It was nearly two
years ago I took my first social media class at UNOH. And tha't pretty much
where my knowlege of social media started and stopped. Until
now.
Since then I have not only become a player on
Facebook, but I've also set up a Facebook page for our TV station. My employer
really hasn't jumped on board with the website, Facebook or Twitter. It's been
a slow growth process. Some at the station have adopted more quickly than others to
embrace this technology. So after Jessica, David and Andy beat me up for a few
years, I finally gave my blessing. The morning crew launched their Facebook
accounts for First Edition. Andy created a page for Your News Now Sports and
Darren created a Facebook page for the weather geeks who love to send in
pictures of their favorite clouds.
. I created our page for news department. Unfortunately, I created it under my own account
name. The result is I see every post via my e mail and smart phone. Thats a
good thing when the viral spew that starts using foul language. I can monitor our
site and delete nasty posts. It's a bad thing when somebody posts that their dog or cat is missing.
Some people are under the impression that our news page is a community page that
allows anything to be post. So far it hasn't turned into a Craig List trying to sell the kitchen sink.
Yeah, as long as you don't cuss, I let about anything and everthing stay up. I have banned
a couple people when they started beating the sports department up for not
showing highlights of their high school team. They didn't seem to get the fact
that when lighting strikes, players lives are placed in danger. Guess what, it
puts my staff in danger as well. We pulled our video crews off the field
and came home to put on a sportscast. The games finished around midnight in some
cases. After taking a verbal tonuge lashing and public dress down about our
lack of committment to sports, I decided to ban the woman from ou rFacebook page.
That's the beauty of social media..you can say anything you want, but remember
it's my Facebook account and I can ban your comments. The FCC hasn't figured
out a way to regulate my editorial content ... yet.
I will have more to say about Facebook and other social media outlets such as Twitter in the future. Remember, I'm
learning about social media, not trying to teach it.
One last thing...What did you think of my blog page title, Lon More... When you have a name like mine that has been
butchered since I was a tyke, I thought I would turn the name around to work to
my advantage. Lonnie is not a name that could be found printed on coffee cups at the gift store,
nor in cereal boxes when they gave away monogrammed mini bicycle license plates.
I was devestated as a youth that I wasn't a Mike, Mark or John. Now days as an
adult, I kind of like my name. Thanks mom. Thanks dad,,,you had the right to call me
anything you wanted. You could have called me worse. God knows I deserved it.
Nope Lonnie has worked pretty well. Of course I shortened it when I started my
broadcasting career. Lonnie became Lon and Tegels became William (my middle
name) Thus Lon Williams was created. Soon there after as I figured out that I wasn't replacing Howard
Cosell at ABC or Dan Rather at CBS, I reverted back to just plain me, Lon
Tegels. I'm ok with just being me.
A blog is a chance for me to vent about nothing. Is that what it's suppose to be?
